The truth? Privacy professionals are people who ask you to pause and think in a world where everyone wants to launch new initiatives—without making sure they aren’t trampling on people’s fundamental rights.
The actual truth is we’re part guardian, part business enabler, part risk predictor, part therapist (yes, you read that right 🙂).
Here’s a breakdown of 4 of a Privacy Professional’s personalities. 🎭
– THE GUARDIAN 🔍 (Protecting People’s Rights)
We put on our protective hats to ensure people’s rights are protected by checking:
· When the last privacy policy was last updated.
· If a vendor is using a third sub-processor in a country without an adequacy decision.
· If a DPA template has a clause.
– THE BUSINESS ENABLER ⚖️ (Making things possible (the right way))
We do this by bridging the gap between tech and marketing teams to ensure that privacy remains a strategic asset and not a blocker by:
· Helping product teams launch faster by building privacy-by-design into the workflow.
· Advising leadership on how strong privacy can differentiate the brand.
· Working with marketing on compliant data collection strategies for a new campaign.
· Collaborating with sales/legal to accelerate contract approvals by pre-clearing DPAs.
-THE FUTURE READINESS NAVIGATOR 🔮 (Identifying risks early)
We foresee privacy risks and ensure technical safeguards are designed by:
· Leading a privacy impact assessment on a new marketing initiative.
· Analyzing how AI data models may pose transparency risks under Bill C-27.
· Flagging cross-border transfer risks during vendor onboarding processes.
· Monitoring privacy trends and updating leadership on upcoming legislative changes.
THE THERAPIST 🛋️ (Privacy Anxiety Management)
Oftentimes, we put on our therapist voice with a client who’s anxious by:
· Reassuring teams that privacy compliance isn’t mission impossible.
· Helping people process the emotional weight of handling personal data.
· Managing the stress of “what if we get audited?”
The rewarding truth: When you get all four working together, magic happens. You protect people’s rights, ensure compliance, help businesses thrive, AND keep everyone emotionally grounded.
To my fellow privacy shapeshifters: Which personality did I miss, and which personality do you find yourself wearing most often? And which one do you wish you had earlier?
